Nest #33

Another nest was laid in the renourishment project area, but our expert team members Liz and Shawn were able to locate the eggs right away despite the incoming tide and the fact that the loggerhead crawled back out over the telltale mound where the eggs are hidden, thus erasing this location clue. Tracks of greatly different lengths on an outgoing tide tell us about how much time she spent on the beach, ie, whether she was there long enough to nest or just making a false crawl.

Nest #33 was discovered by Gillian Ellis who was sharing the Sunday route with Richard Ellis, her father. It contained only 71 eggs. As the end of the season approaches, we often see a decrease in the number of eggs laid. They were taken to the middle of the island between the 30A and 31st Avenue access paths.
