Nest #1 on SI was found on May 30 by Terri George and Kelsey Willey and was not relocated. It was at a good place near the Station 26 path. Terri discovered an emergence crater and hatchling tracks there on Friday morning. Unfortunately, a few of them went back toward the skyglow of light pollution from Mt. Pleasant and the city of Charleston because there is no moon visible this week to guide them. At today's inventory we learned that 114 eggs were laid that incubated for 56 days with 6 eggs undeveloped and 2 live hatchlings in the nest that were released by Mary Irene Delamater to crawl to the water. Hatch Success was 94.2% and Emergence Success was 92.5%.
Nest #7 on IOP, also inventoried this morning in Wild Dunes, had the same number of eggs at 114. It was laid on May 31 near the Ocean Point boardwalk in Dewees inlet at the north end of Wild Dunes. It was discovered by Shree Beverly and Penny Gorby and was moved to Beach Club Villas. They incubated for 55 days before hatching. The genetics sample showed that this turtle, known as Loggerhead #14295 in the study, nested near Jacksonville FL and on Bulls Island in 2021 and there is no record of her nesting again until this nest in 2025. It is possible that she has been nesting in Florida in the interim where there are so many nests that samples are not taken for all of them. We found 107 empty shells, six undeveloped eggs, one dead hatchling and no live ones to release. Hatch Success was 93.8% and Emergence Success was 92.9%.
