Nest #16 - a record for Sullivan's

Nest 16 today tops the highest number of loggerhead nests that have ever been recorded on Sullivan's Island in one season after there were 15 nests in 2015 and again in 2019. This is the fourth nest of the season for Laurie and Bob Snyder on their Wednesday morning patrol day,and one fourth of all the nests for this year. This is the second time a loggerhead has crawled up onto the middle of the Station 16 vehicular path to lay eggs right where the SI Fire & Rescue Squad and the SIPD drive onto the beach. But this turtle seems to know that the tide at that spot washes up to the chopped off dunes and there is no dry beach when the moon is new or full. It would have been easy to miss this nest or the other one laid in this path on June 17. To save the 69 eggs from destruction from traffic, they were relocated to a safe place just north of the Station 19 path near the lighthouse. Congratulations Laurie and Bob!
