IOP Nests 18, 19 & 20 Inventoried

Nest 18 was found by Gillian and Richard Ellis near 57^th Avenue on June 14 and incubated for 54 days. There were 122 eggs in this clutch and hatchling tracks were found on Friday morning August 7. Today we found that only 7 of the eggs did not hatch and all of the hatchlings were gone from the nest. Hatch Success was 93.4%

Nest 19 was laid just north of 29^th Avenue on June 17.  Barbara Jervey and Sissy Harris discovered it low on the beach, so it was moved higher for safely from where trucks drive and the tide floods. It contained 112 eggs that incubated for 53 days before the hatchlings emerged on August 9. Today's inventory revealed 90 empty eggshells, 21 undeveloped eggs and no hatchlings dead or alive still in the nest. Hatch Success here was 80.3%.

Nest 20 was found the same day, June 17 by Sissy Harris and Barbara Jervey. This one was very near to Nest 19 in the 2900 block of Palm, but it also had to be moved off the flat beach below the usual tide line of the new and full moon for safe incubation. This was an extra large clutch of 152 eggs that incubated for only 52 days. Turtles came out sometime in the wee hours of the night on August 8. As we get to the nests laid in the hotter part of the season, the incubation times are getting shorter. We found only 11 unhatched eggs our of the 152 laid, one dead hatchling that was used for paternity DNA sampling and three live ones that Sissy and Barbara released to crawl to the ocean. Hatch Success was 92.1%.
