Nest 21 and Surprise Nest 41 Inventoried on Isle of Palms

Nest 21 was found on June 18 low on the beach below the spring tide line at 618 Ocean Blvd by Ed Peyser and Annie Vola and was moved to 30^th Ave. There were 103 eggs that incubated for 54 days before producing hatchlings. We were hoping to have a hatchling or two to release, but again our turtles did too good a job of getting out of the nest and into the ocean at this nest. We found 96 empty eggshells, only 6 undeveloped eggs. Hatch Success was 93.2%.

Nest 41 was recorded as a false crawl found on June 22nd by Sue White, Rebecca & Gene Kaminski and Kathy Guatteri at the 50th Avenue Access path. We could not fine the eggs that were laid next to the sea oats and a tiny new dune developing there when they were laid. But three days ago Dan & Doreen Tylak were taking a beach stroll on their 54th wedding anniversary. The tide was very high, and they had to walk up in the dunes where they noticed hatchling tracks. If not for them, we would have missed this nest. Sheri Scarlett went with us to look for the "emergence crater" where the turtles came out of the sand, and she was the one who found it. Today's inventory showed that 84 eggs were laid, and only 32 of them hatched with 52 undeveloped. There were no hatchlings in the nest. Hatch Success was 37.6%. We had to use a shell from one of the unhatched eggs for our genetics sample.
