Nest #5 at Ocean Club Villas May 29

Our fifth nest of the season was laid up against the steeply scarped dune at Ocean Club Villas where the tide would certainly destroy the eggs. Laura Lovins, Holly Barron, Allen Owens and Bryan Stevens discovered the loggerhead tracks that were 26" wide.

Inside the egg chamber was some very coarse and shell-laden material, possibly from the recent sand erosion project. Fortunately none of the eggs were damaged by being cut by these sharp sea shells. There were 124 eggs that were transported to a suitable dune at Beach Club Villas, also in Wild Dunes, where they could incubate safely for hatching in almost two months. Our usual genetics sample was taken for analysis at the University of Georgia. (Double click on image)
