Our second loggerhead mom came ashore on the Isle of Palms halfway between the 35A and 36A beach access paths last night. Bill Evans, along with June and George Bianchi, were covering this section of beach when Bill spotted the huge unmistakable loggerhead tracks the led to a body pit just above the high tide line and well below several spring tide lines on the flat beach.
This is the same size as the tracks at 46th Avenue the night before at 20" between claw marks. Looks like she came back again and succeeded this time.
Barb Gobien was celebrating her birthday today and probed, quickly finding the soft spot over the eggs where several curious ghost crabs had dug. The eggs were undamaged and numbered 106. They were taken to a safe dune near the 30A access path to incubate. The nest was marked with a DNR sign and covered with a protective self-releasing screen so the hatchlings can come out when they are ready.
