Sullivan's Island gets Nest #3 June 17

Someone forgot to tell the loggerhead mom of this nest that our patrol area ends at the Station 29 Street path. She nested toward Breach Inlet at the north end of the island from there last night. Helga Greim noticed the tracks and reported them after Ginger Colvin and Karen Bartlett had finished the usual patrol area from Stations 19 to 29. Turtle Team members Michael & Ashley Kirshtein and their daughter live at 26 1/2 and were delighted to see this nest as well. With so much erosion and sandbars offshore on Sullivan's Island, it is sometimes hard for loggerheads to come ashore to nest.

The turtle laid 109 eggs below the spring tide line, so the nest was relocated to Station 26 where it would be safe for incubation. Blowing sand had obscured the important field signs needed to find the eggs, but all is well.

Congratulations, Sullivan's Island Turtle Team!
